You can't save everyone. Some people are only meant to be in your life for a short period of time. I have had similar issues with someone who was very good to me when I struggled in high school, so I tried to write off some of their behavior until it got to a point I couldn't... So I get it.
The hard thing for me with this guy was that after years apart he seemed the same. He even mentioned that night, over drinks, that he wanted to just have what we used to have. I was a wildly different person. I know we all grow and change, and he did too. But I've never gone so long between seeing someone just to see them appear the same. It was so hard.
